Representation in Games

Games are mediums made for players. Though, there have been some challenges in designing games that are representative. Not just representative of their designers; but more representative of players around the world. Games need to address and take on the mantle of representation more than have they have done in the past. That's due to a growing diversity of players, designers, academics, and industry leaders.

This presentation will address the historical overview of representation in games as well as how representation reflects the direction of the game industry. The presentation will review reasons to become more representative as well as some negative aspects that under-representation or misrepresentation has had in games. The presentation will cover the growing diversity of gamers as well as some prime examples to follow. Representation is addressed as a concept of design accessibility and is followed with actions designers and gamers can take.

Sid Meier's Memoir!: A Conversation with Sid Meier about His Life in Computer Games

In his first video game instruction manual, for 1982's Formula 1 Racing, a 28-year-old systems analyst for General Instruments named Sid Meier declared that he hoped to one day "write the ultimate strategy game." At the time he was installing networked cash register systems in retail stores. Nine years later, his software company, MicroProse, released Civilization, arguably the most influential strategy game in video game history. It was the first significant design in the 4X genre ("Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate"). Computer Gaming World called it "a new Olympian in the genre of god games." PC Gamer US said it was the second-best video game ever created. Since then, the Civilization franchise has sold approximately 51 million units. Today, Sid Meier is a recognized giant in the field of video game design and development. His best known and best loved games include Pirates!, Railroad Tycoon, Covert Action, Gettysburg!, and F19 Stealth Fighter. Now he brings his signature wit and good humor to the story of his own development. In SID MEIER'S MEMOIR!: A Life in Computer Games [W. W. Norton & Company; September 8, 2020; $27.95 hardcover], he traces the arc of a legendary career, including the founding of MicroPose; the evolution of their famous war game manuals; the commercial failure of C.P.U. Bach, a visionary music generator inspired by his passion for the program's namesake; and the abandonment of "DinoCiv," his beloved dinosaur game that never came to be.

Omegathon Round 1: Meet the Omeganauts!

Begun, the Omegathon has.

Time to meet your Omeganauts! We are changing things up for PAX Online, instead of cutting players each round, we are letting everyone compete in every round.

What that means is we will have 6 competitors playing each stage of the Omegathon, in a Grand Prix style leaderboard. Depending how they perform each round, they will get points that might change their ranking. The two highest scores at the end of the week will compete head to head in the Omegathon final round.

Because you will have a lot of time watching and following along all show, we've dedicated the first round to getting to know our players. This will be an interview session as our chief Omegatech Travis interviews the competitors on the field of glory and prepares them for the trials ahead.

Also, this Omegathon isn't just a spectator sport! For PAX Online you can pick your own champions and score points based on how well your own personal lineup does. See the #Omegathon channel in the PAX Discord for more information on how to join in.

Fantasy and Indigenous Culture: Collaborating with First Nations Musicians on the Innchanted Soundtrack

Presented by Creative Victoria

How does a non-Indigenous composer try to create an Indigenous Australian game score? By connecting with some of the most talented Indigenous Australian musicians around.

Composer Meena Shamaly details his process of collaborating with First Nations musicians to create a culturally respectful, celebratory, and entertaining score to InnChanted, a game set in a fantasy Australian world. It is a process of complete openness and extensive cultural dialogue, as well as collaborative experimentation and free-spirited improvisation from the musicians. Meena draws on his knowledge as a game composer, his own cultural experience as a session musician, and his extensive research involved in presenting the music of video games on ABC Classic (not to mention his lifelong obsession with video game music).

This talk will break down Meena's sessions and conversations with some of Australia's most talented First Nations musicians, including Allara Briggs-Pattison (NIMA 2020 finalist for New Talent of the Year), Kiernan Ironfield (of DRMNGNOW), and Eric Avery (renowned violinist, dancer, and creator of Dancing with Strangers). It will showcase how a game score can be composed not just in response to the game itself, but also to the musicians' innate connection to culture and language, no matter the instruments on which they express themselves.

Gaming Research Outcomes for the Past 20 Years

People are staying in and consuming media. We have been led to believe that violent games 'make kids violent' and, with a 35% increase in game sales and a spike in Call of Duty gaming during the pandemic, are we seeing the sorts of increases in violence that this relationship would predict?
There is also a push to identify 'extremely violent' media as separate from, and having different consequences to, 'normally violent' media. Further, there are groups who argue that violent gaming negatively impacts attitudes towards women. Are these concerns justified?
The gaming industry has moved from a pay-per-game model to a free download and in-game model of income. There are anecdotal data that people are also playing for longer when they play. In effect, players are experiencing greater exposure to in-game violence and in-game monetisation mechanics. Is this a problem?

Gamifying Government: 3rd Time's a Charm

Presented by Creative Victoria

When you think of the public service, you may think that it's just people running essential services, creating documents and policies. However there is much more that we do, in both experimentation, innovation and engagement. The following panel is a chance for the public to learn what some departments are doing with games based technologies and how they are getting involved within the industry itself.

Australian government departments are exploring and embracing new and emerging technologies all the time to deliver 21st century services, outcomes and experiences for the Australian public. Utilising technologies and practices including VR, AR, 3D engines, AI, prototyping and Analytics. These approaches aim to engage and interact with users, and are increasingly being addapted and applied within new government initiatives.

Come along and listen to departments representatives talk about their engagement and use of games technology and practices within our public service.

DIY Robot Overlord: How does AI really work?

In this session, game developers from Tasmania's (that's in Australia) Secret Lab (we work on Night in the Woods) and academics (who study everything from human-computer interaction to machine learning) will reveal what genuine AI is, how machine learning works, and how the rise of our machine overlords might still be a few decades away yet...

Live online, we'll take audience suggestions and use them to train a real, actual AI to play a game. It'll wage war, walk, navigate, or maybe just flop around the place. As you watch.

We'll use the popular Unity game engine, and cutting edge machine learning technology (Google's TensorFlow framework, if you're into this stuff). Have fun and learn a little about about AI without that pesky maths stuff! Get enthused about science, and see how games are super, super useful for this. How can a 8-limbed beast learn to walk, without animations or custom coding? How can a mighty fighting mech learn to wage an eternal war? Come find out!

World of Nintendo: Exploring Nintendo in [Eastern] Europe

The NES has been credited with re-vitalizing the American video game industry with numerous publications exploring Nintendo's flagship console invading the household of American children

The NES, however, was not limited to just the US. Most commonly cited regions of release for the NES include Australia, Western Europe, and Japan.

Other regions such as Central/Eastern Europe have been downplayed or skipped over in the context of the NES, with the assumption that they were home to only clones, such as the Russian Dendy or the Polish Pegasus.

However as we will explore, nearly every country within continental Europe had an official Nintendo presence, with hundreds of thousands of dollars being poured into marketing the NES, GB, and SNES in the 1990s.

In this presentation, we will look at how Nintendo - and the NES - arrived in Poland and Hungary, while also exploring their presence in other parts of Europe such as the Czech Republic, Romania, and the former Yugoslava.

Narrative Design of Midsommar: What Horror Games Can Learn

If you're like us, you found yourself contemplating grief, isolation, and gore long after Midsommar's credits rolled. Ari Aster's 2019 Scandanavian folk-horror film makes use of a number of effective mechanics which can be applied to video games. While games and movies should be appreciated as their own art-forms, horror games as an institution could take certain cues from the film's sunlit, floral unease. Join four narrative designers as we discuss the confluence of Midsommar's audio, visual, narrative, and psychological design as it relates to interactive storytelling. This talk aims to expand the toolbox that developers use to create innovative storytelling experiences. Regardless of medium, well-executed horror grips its observers by the guts and holds them close. Do you feel held?

Friday Afternoon Concert - 88Bit

88bit is the alter ego of Cleveland-based composer/pianist, Rob Kovacs, where he performs virtuosic note-for-note piano arrangements of classic video game soundtracks from the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Kovacs' repertoire consists of music from Mega Man 2, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest as well as lesser-known games such as Marble Madness, Adventures of Lolo, Arkista's Ring and others. By acoustically recreating early electronic music (music never intended to be performed by humans), Kovacs is stretching the limits of traditional classical piano playing and bringing video game music to audiences that might never have otherwise heard the music.

Where is the Finish Line?

All games must end. This is especially important for competitive games. A single-player game ends when you decide to stop playing. But a competitive game ends when someone wins. Or does it? Turns out a lot of competitive games are over before they're over. A good game can be ruined by ending too soon or too late. Too late, and you have players who have already lost trapped with nothing meaningful to do. Too soon, and you didn't even "get to the good part."

If you're designing a game, how can you determine the best time for the game to end? The conditions that make it happen? Join GeekNights for a thorough examination of the common types of game ending conditions and exploration of a process to determine which one is best for your game.
