Representation in Games

Games are mediums made for players. Though, there have been some challenges in designing games that are representative. Not just representative of their designers; but more representative of players around the world. Games need to address and take on the mantle of representation more than have they have done in the past. That's due to a growing diversity of players, designers, academics, and industry leaders.

This presentation will address the historical overview of representation in games as well as how representation reflects the direction of the game industry. The presentation will review reasons to become more representative as well as some negative aspects that under-representation or misrepresentation has had in games. The presentation will cover the growing diversity of gamers as well as some prime examples to follow. Representation is addressed as a concept of design accessibility and is followed with actions designers and gamers can take.

Build Your Guild: Make and Support Friends in Gaming

Have you ever made a new friend while playing a game, and wondered why some games have more supportive and uplifting communities than others? Join us in a conversation about the impact gaming communities can have on mental health. Panelists will include members of the Guild Wars family and mental health experts who will share how players can get to know each other, build friendships, and support each other in-game.

Encore: Sid Meier's Memoir!: A Conversation with Sid Meier about His Life in Computer Games

ENCORE SCREENING
In his first video game instruction manual, for 1982's Formula 1 Racing, a 28-year-old systems analyst for General Instruments named Sid Meier declared that he hoped to one day "write the ultimate strategy game." At the time he was installing networked cash register systems in retail stores. Nine years later, his software company, MicroProse, released Civilization, arguably the most influential strategy game in video game history. It was the first significant design in the 4X genre ("Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate"). Computer Gaming World called it "a new Olympian in the genre of god games." PC Gamer US said it was the second-best video game ever created. Since then, the Civilization franchise has sold approximately 51 million units. Today, Sid Meier is a recognized giant in the field of video game design and development. His best known and best loved games include Pirates!, Railroad Tycoon, Covert Action, Gettysburg!, and F19 Stealth Fighter. Now he brings his signature wit and good humor to the story of his own development. In SID MEIER'S MEMOIR!: A Life in Computer Games [W. W. Norton & Company; September 8, 2020; $27.95 hardcover], he traces the arc of a legendary career, including the founding of MicroPose; the evolution of their famous war game manuals; the commercial failure of C.P.U. Bach, a visionary music generator inspired by his passion for the program's namesake; and the abandonment of "DinoCiv," his beloved dinosaur game that never came to be.

Once strictly defined, roguelikes now encompass a wide range of popular titles incorporating procedural generation and permadeath in ways far beyond what the original designers of Rogue could have ever imagined. Gaming Research Outcomes for the Past 20 Years

People are staying in and consuming media. We have been led to believe that violent games 'make kids violent' and, with a 35% increase in game sales and a spike in Call of Duty gaming during the pandemic, are we seeing the sorts of increases in violence that this relationship would predict?
There is also a push to identify 'extremely violent' media as separate from, and having different consequences to, 'normally violent' media. Further, there are groups who argue that violent gaming negatively impacts attitudes towards women. Are these concerns justified?
The gaming industry has moved from a pay-per-game model to a free download and in-game model of income. There are anecdotal data that people are also playing for longer when they play. In effect, players are experiencing greater exposure to in-game violence and in-game monetisation mechanics. Is this a problem?
This panel comprises some of the world's leading gaming researchers to discuss and debate these issues.

Narrative Design of Midsommar: What Horror Games Can Learn

If you're like us, you found yourself contemplating grief, isolation, and gore long after Midsommar's credits rolled. Ari Aster's 2019 Scandanavian folk-horror film makes use of a number of effective mechanics which can be applied to video games. While games and movies should be appreciated as their own art-forms, horror games as an institution could take certain cues from the film's sunlit, floral unease. Join four narrative designers as we discuss the confluence of Midsommar's audio, visual, narrative, and psychological design as it relates to interactive storytelling. This talk aims to expand the toolbox that developers use to create innovative storytelling experiences. Regardless of medium, well-executed horror grips its observers by the guts and holds them close. Do you feel held?

Midsommar is a graphic horror film. As we will be discussing its plot and design in detail, please visit www.imdb.com/title/tt8772262/parentalguide for a complete list of applicable content warnings.

Describing the Indescribable: Keeping Your Monsters Fresh!

"Each time you present a monster, present it afresh. Make the description intense and visceral. A deep one is never just a deep one. It is a creature from the depths of the sea and old as time itself, a creature whose very presence hits you deep in the gut, repelling humanity in a profound manner causing revulsion and nausea." --Gamemaster advice from The Malleus Monstrorum, Cthulhu Mythos Bestiary (2020).

The easy identification of a monster takes away the mystery and reveals details about the plot. The Cthulhu Mythos brims with otherworldly beings from beyond space and time. Fantasy games like Dungeons and Dragons feature familiar creatures known from decades of play. This panel of leading RPG creators and gamemasters discuss how to ensure recurring monsters do not become mundane for your players in any game system. They also seek to answer to the ultimate question, "How Does One Describe Something Supposedly Indescribable?"
