Fantasy and Indigenous Culture: Collaborating with First Nations Musicians on the Innchanted Soundtrack

Presented by Creative Victoria

How does a non-Indigenous composer try to create an Indigenous Australian game score? By connecting with some of the most talented Indigenous Australian musicians around.

Composer Meena Shamaly details his process of collaborating with First Nations musicians to create a culturally respectful, celebratory, and entertaining score to InnChanted, a game set in a fantasy Australian world. It is a process of complete openness and extensive cultural dialogue, as well as collaborative experimentation and free-spirited improvisation from the musicians. Meena draws on his knowledge as a game composer, his own cultural experience as a session musician, and his extensive research involved in presenting the music of video games on ABC Classic (not to mention his lifelong obsession with video game music).

This talk will break down Meena's sessions and conversations with some of Australia's most talented First Nations musicians, including Allara Briggs-Pattison (NIMA 2020 finalist for New Talent of the Year), Kiernan Ironfield (of DRMNGNOW), and Eric Avery (renowned violinist, dancer, and creator of Dancing with Strangers). It will showcase how a game score can be composed not just in response to the game itself, but also to the musicians' innate connection to culture and language, no matter the instruments on which they express themselves.

Diverse Distribution Leads to Diverse Games

Description: Since we started sharing games, we've been doing so in a bunch of ways, from swapping discs we found in cereal boxes to downloading files from suspicious Geocities sites. Nowadays, we are using digital downloads far more often, but there are still a lot of options for where people distribute their games. We've all heard of Steam, but it might not be as accessible for some developers as itchio, or make developers as much money as the Epic Games Store. Find out how limiting where we look for games or which platforms we value also limits the diversity of what we get to play.

World of Nintendo: Exploring Nintendo in [Eastern] Europe

The NES has been credited with re-vitalizing the American video game industry with numerous publications exploring Nintendo's flagship console invading the household of American children

The NES, however, was not limited to just the US. Most commonly cited regions of release for the NES include Australia, Western Europe, and Japan.

Other regions such as Central/Eastern Europe have been downplayed or skipped over in the context of the NES, with the assumption that they were home to only clones, such as the Russian Dendy or the Polish Pegasus.

However as we will explore, nearly every country within continental Europe had an official Nintendo presence, with hundreds of thousands of dollars being poured into marketing the NES, GB, and SNES in the 1990s.

In this presentation, we will look at how Nintendo - and the NES - arrived in Poland and Hungary, while also exploring their presence in other parts of Europe such as the Czech Republic, Romania, and the former Yugoslava.

Where is the Finish Line?

All games must end. This is especially important for competitive games. A single-player game ends when you decide to stop playing. But a competitive game ends when someone wins. Or does it? Turns out a lot of competitive games are over before they're over. A good game can be ruined by ending too soon or too late. Too late, and you have players who have already lost trapped with nothing meaningful to do. Too soon, and you didn't even "get to the good part."

If you're designing a game, how can you determine the best time for the game to end? The conditions that make it happen? Join GeekNights for a thorough examination of the common types of game ending conditions and exploration of a process to determine which one is best for your game.
